Vital Instructions on How to Write a Summary Essay

A summary essay may not be the most common type of academic writing, but you will need to know how to go about creating it should the need arise. Therefore, you have to understand what kind of essay it is and what are the things it should include.

Usually, one is given a task to write a summary essay after some complicated reading. The purpose of this paper is to present the thoughts of the writer on the subject. This is why every summary essay is different, even if the text they are based on is the same.

Steps to Writing a Summary Essay

There are six main steps to writing a summary essay. They are:

  1. Reading
  2. Naturally, you will need to start with reading the assigned text. Be sure not to take any notes or make highlights yet. This way, you will be able to get a better grasp of the material as a whole.

  3. Rereading
  4. Now, you will need to read the text one more time. You may need to do this a couple of times, if the material is complex and you feel that you cannot understand it fully.

This time you should take notes and make highlights.

You will also need to look up all unfamiliar terms in order to be sure that you understand the author’s ideas correctly.

  5. Summarize paragraphs
  6. Next, you will need to start working on your summarizing skills. You’ll have to write a short summary of every paragraph. This will solidify your understanding of the piece and the notes will serve as a partial draft for the essay.

  7. Write a rough draft
  8. Summary that you have on hands now isn’t a complete draft, because it doesn’t include your thoughts on the subject and thesis. Thus, you will need to rectify that by creating an essay as you see it.

The first draft you make should be detailed, as it will be easier to edit it and cut out something than to try inserting additional parts in the body of the work.

  9. Take a break
  10. It’s very important that you don’t start polishing your draft right away. This is why you should have enough time before the deadline to be able to take a short break before going back to it.

After you let it sit for a few hours, you should go over the text you’ve been reading once more and look over the draft after this. Make sure that it includes all the necessary information.

  11. Revise and edit
  12. Last, revise the work for a couple of times and polish it.
